Ship project history: With the success of the Lightning a class of improved sisters was ordered from her builder. These differed from her in not having the coach top aft, and they all had her final armament arrangement from the start, TB10 was the odd man out, having a ram bow and therefore somewhat different lines, but otherwise was the same. For some time they were considered 'very fair seaboats' but were really too small and fragile for successful service in the open sea, and became rapidly obsolete. By 1886 they could make about 16kts at sea. They were later fitted with 2 torpedoes in dropping gear. A couple were used for trials with various forms of spar torpedo.

Modernizations: 1880s, all: - 1 x 1 - 406 TT; + 2 - 356 TC

Naval service: No significant events.
